Strength In Numbers – Why Fitness Communities are the Future

Group interaction is increasingly becoming more and more important in fitness circles. Thanks to the rise in social media, Instagram and Facebook have become an endless source for personal trainers, fitness bloggers, and wellbeing/lifestyle influencers.

We are continuously bombarded with articles and images of the svelte and healthy. It can be hard to tell who’s the real deal. Such accounts can actually be demoralising and misleading, portraying unrealistic visions of the human body – let us all remember the #thighgap trend, and now let’s immediately forget that.

But actually, becoming part of a true fitness community is one of the best things you can do for yourself. There are plenty of reputable nutritionists and personal trainers to get behind, and a plethora of fitness communities ready to welcome you in with (sweaty) open arms.

Whether you’re a running newbie or a gym bunny, these communities are a great source of motivation, advice and support.

Benefits of joining a fitness community

Fitness communities come in all shapes and sizes. This can be in the form of a group gym class, bootcamps, fitness apps (hello Auro) and online forums.

The best fitness communities feel like true friends. You have a genuine bond and rapport with other group members, feeling motivated, encouraged, supported and challenged to push yourself to improve.

It’s this communal, social side of a group that trumps solitary training. A ‘we’re all in this together’ attitude is hugely beneficial. It keeps you motivated, engaged, and accountable.

This is especially true for beginners. Not sure how to train? Coming back from an injury? You have an abundance of likeminded people, all with firsthand experience, ready and waiting to give you their top tips. The mutual sharing of successes and challenges, techniques and personal goals actually can get you that positive encouragement you need to get back to the gym.

It’s the ultimate form of motivation.

How to find the right one for you

Major brands have cottoned onto this too; the Nike run club has a huge following. So how do you find the right one for you?

Figure out what type of physical activity you actually enjoy. Not just tolerate, but properly like to do on a regular basis. If you don’t like what you’re doing, you’ll eventually stop, so work out what sort of exercise tickles your pickle and find a community around that. Great minds think alike, so you’ll be sure to connect with your kind of folk.

What do you want from this? Do you want to be surrounded by people at the same fitness level as you? Would you prefer a focus on the science behind exercise or more emotional support? Have a think about these questions. They’ll help you come to a decision about the right community culture for you.

Speaking of which, take a look at these groups’ social media. This will give you a great look at the vibe of the community, the social interaction among members, and whether or not it’s the place for you.

You’ll know when you’ve found your fitness tribe

Above all, and most importantly, fitness communities allow you to make connections.

Being a part of a fitness community gives you not only a sense of support, but you can find real, genuine connections with likeminded people from all over the globe. These friendships really do enhance your life as a whole. It’s no longer just a workout, a run, or bike ride, it’s overall health and wellbeing, and that’s so important.

So what are you waiting for? Join our Auro fam and get involved. We always love hearing from you, so don’t be a stranger.
