10 Ways to Find Your Exercise Routine

You probably live a busy life. That’s why staying fit can be a pain. Things always get in the way – work, family, friends. Whatever else. So how can you keep fit and healthy? Start by asking yourself this – “Why is finding an exercise routine important?”

Well, here are a few reasons why; improved cognitive function, better sleep, higher metabolism, a healthier heart. But that’s not our topic for today. They’re outcomes, not causes. And we try to help you avoid the doctor!

You know you need to stay healthy to keep your busy life running smoothly. But how do you do that? Habits. Find a fun way to make fitness a part of your day and stick to it. It doesn’t need to be too difficult at first.

Here are 10 easy ways to help you start (and stick to) an exercise routine:

1. Start Slowly

Seriously. Take it easy. There’s no point exhausting yourself, only to give up after a few days. The best plan is the one you enjoy and stick to.

First, try to understand your current exercise experience. Here’s a rough guideline:

  • Beginner = 0-6 months
  • Intermediate = 6-24 months
  • Advanced = 24+ months

If you’ve had more than 24 months’ experience but are returning after a long break, we’d recommend starting as a beginner again.

It’s important to start with beginner level workouts and gradually move towards advanced training. Doing this allows you to see best results, develop proper technique and avoid injury.

2. Plan Your Workouts

Why waste your time?  Planning is critical to the success of your workout routine. It’s silly to go to the gym or start a run without even a rough idea of what you want to do.

Think about it before and the process becomes much smoother.

3. Set a Target

Setting a target is key to achieving your goals. Using the SMART template (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Timely) you have a guideline you can use to plan your goals and make them easier to accomplish. For example, let’s say you want to burn 200 calories a day consistently for the next week. The goal is Specific at 200 calories, Measurable through the calorie counter on our app, Achievable with just one workout a day, Relevant to your fitness goals, and Timely as it is a stretched over a week.

4. Get Your Clothing Right

Believe it or not, choosing your workout outfit can be important to your success. Wear something to make you feel comfortable and confident. Dress for success!

If possible, we’d recommend a breathable, natural fabric. Cotton is often your best bet. Do you really want to sweat sticking to your skin? Thought not.

5. Prepare Yourself Beforehand

As the old saying goes, “By failing to prepare, you’re preparing to fail”. Preparedness relates back to the points in ‘Plan Your Workout’. Let’s be honest, you want to be effective. The goal here is to just have your gym clothes and accessories ready to go for your scheduled workout.

If you’re a morning exerciser, it’s a great idea to lay out your clothes the night before. You’ll be surprised at how much easier it is to find motivation.

6. Set your Timings

Planning your workouts for the week can be beneficial to help you create a disciplined schedule and routine. We’d recommend to sticking to a set time each day (not necessarily every day!) so you don’t have to think about it.

7. Be Consistent

Consistency is key to forming a workout habit. Once you’ve done a few workouts, it becomes far easier to continue. Don’t put pressure on yourself. Get out and do it.

8. Enjoy Yourself

We get it, exercising isn’t fun for everyone. But once you find a routine, you start to see progress. And enjoyment comes alongside that progress. Even if you’re reluctant to exercise, begin with something you find moderately entertaining.

If you’re easily bored, change it up!

9. Find a Friend

This might be the most important thing. You can ask friends or family to join your fitness journey. Not only will they help support you, you’ll be held accountable to maintain a consistent fitness schedule. Share your success with someone close to you!

10. Sleep Tight

Most doctors suggest that 7 to 8 hours of sleep per day is essential to maintain good health. During the restorative stage of sleep, the body switches itself to repair mode and starts to heal. At this time important functions like tissue repair and memory consolidation are performed. We all know a healthy mind is the first step to a healthy body.
