Back to basics: How to rebuild your fitness after lockdown

Just as you were starting to get into the swing of things at the gym, BOOM, lockdown comes along and throws the ultimate spanner in the works. This pandemic has by no means been easy for any of us, physically, mentally and emotionally, with restrictions to daily exercise and gyms closing down. However, after months of isolating, gyms are finally starting to reopen. Many of us may have admittedly been sedentary during this pandemic, therefore, it is important to ease yourself slowly back into your fitness routine.

For some, you may feel nervous about the thought of returning to the gym, as it can be intimidating after being away for a while. We have 5 simple tips on how to rebuild your fitness after lockdown, helping you gain your confidence back and get you up to your optimum fitness level.

1. Avoid pushing yourself too hard

This has been a pandemic; it is not a race to see who can get back into shape the fastest. Slow and steady wins the race… and also prevents injuries!

Pace yourself. Start by setting small goals to keep you focused. For example, if you were previously running 10km every week, why not start by running 3km and see how your body feels. Setting smaller and achievable will keep you motivated.

Whether you are a first-time gym bunny or a long-time fitness fanatic, Auro have a variety of training plans for all fitness levels and abilities, starting with a beginner level plan may help build up your confidence to move onto the next levels. It is the little achievements that take you on your journey to your dream goal.

Workout classes range from 10 minutes all the way to 1 hour+, so if you are pushed for time one day or not feeling your best, you can squeeze in a smaller workout and slowly increase this as your fitness builds.

 2. Do what feels right for you

If you feel like taking a rest day, do it! If you only want to do a 15 minute walk some days, that’s fine. Listen to your body and give yourself the time you need to relax and recover. Lockdown has been really hard on everyone, not just physically but mentally too. It is important to take some time out if you need to.

Rest days are just as important as exercise. We are always encouraged to stay active and workout every day, however it is so beneficial for your body to relax, as this allows muscle tissues to heal and grow. A sign that you may need a rest day includes sore muscles, fatigue and reduced performance. If any of this sounds familiar, take it easy for a day or two and let your body repair.

Auro provide a variety of meditations, from breath awareness to sleep classes. Each class is led by an expert meditation teacher, with years of experience in the art of mindfulness to help you unwind and relax your body and mind.

3. Stretch

Don’t forget to stretch before AND after your workouts. Stretching eliminates lactic acid and relaxes your muscles after exercise. It allows the body to cool down and blood to circulate so that your muscles can recover and repair.

There are over 30 yoga and stretch classes available on the Auro app, ranging from just 5 minutes to half an hour. So, no matter how busy your schedule is, you can squeeze in that time to relax and help repair your muscles.

4. Find a friend to keep you motivated

After months of sheltering, it is understandable that we will all be feeling more tired than usual when trying to get back into our daily routines. Finding a workout partner to encourage you will help you both stay on track and motivated. Try and make workouts fun and part of your social life. For example, going for walks with your mates, doing yoga in the park or starting a workout plan together.

Research from Kansas State University found that people who worked out with someone who they thought was at a higher fitness level than themselves increased their workout time and intensity by 200%! So, grab your workout buddy this weekend for a killer gym session.

5. Find a training programme

Research suggests that you are 2 times as likely to reach your goals if you train with a structured plan. Having a training plan provides continuous motivation, stops you from reverting back to old ways, as well as preventing you from under training and over training. It can also keep you motivated to eat healthier and be more productive with your time. Auro’s ‘Back to the Gym’ training program is the perfect place to start if you haven’t worked out in a while and you need guidance with where to start again. Going back to the gym after a break can be a little daunting. But fear not, our expert personal trainings are right beside you guiding you through the 6 week plan.
